Get A Cell's Value From A Different Row Of The Same Table?

Dec 11, 2012

I have myself a MySQL table called A.

A has three columns

ID, Parent ID, and Name.

Organization ID is auto-incremented and never null. Parent ID can be null. The name is just A, B, C, D, E, etc.

My question is. When I display the information, instead of displaying the Parent ID, I want to get the parent name instead.

To further explain what I want, consider the following information:

1, 5, HELLO
2, 5, POPPET
3, 5, HI
4, 5, BYE
6, , LOL
7, 8, LUL

Should become

6, , LOL

Something like that. I'm semi-convinced that the solution is simple, but I am fairly new to MySQL and do not know much about the syntax to do cool things.

It seems overly simple but do I need to join the table with itself? I was thinking of a SELECT on the table with a LEFT JOIN on itself. Is there some way of referencing another row? An easier way perhaps? :)

Set Value Of Cell Equal To Value Of Cell In Another Row?

Mar 25, 2013

I have a MySQL query that generates a table for my vehicle tracking 'in' and 'out' times.

The problem is that the 'in' time is not the same as the 'out' time so seconds or minutes are lost in between.

Is there a way to set the 'in' time equal to the 'out time' from the previous row, even if I need to embed my current select inside a new select?

you will see on the image below that the first rows out time is 15:45:14 and the in time for the next row is 15:46:14. so in this case a minute is lost

in reality if the vehicles has left one point, it is immediately on the road to the next point so I can set the in time equal to the out time of the previous row. This way, time is never lost

the sql for my query is:

select vehicle,InTime,OutTime from (select
PreQuery.callingname as vehicle,

The MySQL syntax is in depth so quite large but could be done on a much simpler query as well. like

select vehicle, intime,outtime from vehicletimes

My desired result is something like:

select vehicle, intime(outtime of row above),outtime from vehicletimes

The first rows in time can be as is and the last rows outtime can be as is. I just need to account for every second between the smallest in time and the largest out time.

Changing Cell Value Of A Table

Nov 25, 2012

I am trying to edit a particular cell in my table 'instance'. I want to change the "Default" value of "world_id" from 1 to 8.

Here is the table:

Using this format:

UPDATE table_name
SET column1=value, column2=value2,...
WHERE some_column=some_value

My column is Default and my row is world_id, so I substitute column1 for Default and some_column for Field, yes? This is what I have entered:

UPDATE instance SET Default=8 WHERE Field=world_id;

However this spits out an SQL syntax error.

PHP Changing Cell Color When Pulling In Table

Jul 8, 2012

I have one php page that pulls in information from my sql table that has many different columns. This is the code......

$sql = "SELECT * FROM 2012_TNAfigures ORDER BY id DESC";
$query = mysql_query($sql) or die(mysql_error());
echo "<table class='tableDressing' id='2012table'><tbody>";
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($query)){

When that pulls the numbers in, the columns will each have different numbers that I need to apply color changes depending on the values in that cell. Here is what I've created for making the color changes..

if (($row >= 1) && ($row <= 46))
$openColor = $red;
else if (($row >= 46.01) && ($row <= 60))
$openColor = $green;

As you can see, $row doesn't work. What I don't know how to do is pull in a column, say "open", verify the value of that column in my function and then have that determine which color to use. There will be many rows thrown out for each column as well, with changing values. I assume I need to assign that column to a variable, then parse that variable through the function, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Select Table 2 Row Using As Key / Unknown Contents Of A Table1 Cell

Jan 9, 2011

As a beginner with MySQL, I have the idea that my web app will be as responsive as it can be if I take care to minimize the number of selects that the app has to do.

Suppose I have two tables:
-- `customers` with a column `CusID` and a column `likes` with the customer's favorite artists and composers
-- `artists` with a column `ArtID` and a column `titles` with the artist's works

`customers` `artists`
+-------+---------------+ +-------------+---------------+
| CusID | likes | | ArtID | titles |
+-------+---------------+ +-------------+---------------+
| A | BachJS | | BachJS | GoldbergVars |
| A | Mozart | | BachJS | MassBMinor |

Now I want to select from `artists` each row whose `ArtID` corresponds to each of the `likes` of each `CusID`. I am pretty sure I can do what I want with multiple selects. But I want to retrieve these rows from `artists` with (finally, the whole point of this question) just one single select. Something similar to (in OO-like terms):

select `titles`,`ArtID` from `artists` where `artists`.`ArtID` = `customers`.`CusID`.`likes`;

From my fantastical select operation, I want to see these rows come back:

| CusID | titles | ArtID |
| A | GoldbergVars | BachJS |
| A | MassBMinor | BachJS |
| A | Jupiter41 | Mozart |
| A | Requiem | Mozart |

Is such a select operation legal/possible? If so, what would be its syntax? If the operation is illegal, what would be the syntax of the fewest possible select requests?

Php - Store Multiple References For Another Table Inside One Cell And Select It

May 16, 2012

I have two tables

table: people
id name goods_owned
1 john 1,4,3
2 Mike 2,5
3 Sam 1,5,2
4 Andy 5,3,4

table goods:
g_id g_name g_class
1 sugar food
2 salt food
3 boat transp
4 house habitation
5 car transp

this is simple example of table goods its actually very long and each person in people can have multiple goods assigned to him e.g. car, boat, sugar etc there is no limitation of how much one person can have and its totally random. I could not find better way to store it than coma separated e.g. 1,5,3

I am having the problem making selection i need to have e.g.

SELECT people.*,
FROM people
LEFT JOIN goods ON goods.g_id = people.goods_owned
WHERE name = "Sam"

However problem is goods_owned has multiple ID's of goods in cell and they need to be somehow broken down to get answer:

1, Sam, sugar, car, salt

If you know better alternative to storing (e.g 100) multiple values coma separated in one cell .

Remove Signature Value From Table

Jul 22, 2013

I run a forum which uses Invision Power Board and I want to remove the the 'signature' value from the 'ibf_profile_portal' table with an SQL query however the issue being that I only want to do it for members that are in all user groups apart from 1, 5, & 7 which would be identified under 'ibf_members' 'member_group_id'

So in effect members who are assigned a primary group of 1,5,7 remain untouched - all other members have the 'signature' field in 'ibf_profile_portal' emptied.

The difficulty is that this is across two tables and the only common value is the member ID however under the ibf_members table - member id is member_id and under the 'ibf_profile_portal' where the 'signature' field is held member id is 'pp_member_id' So whilst the value of those fields would be the same the table titles are not.

Remove Duplicate Rows In One Of Table?

Jun 8, 2010

I have a code to remove the duplicates in one of my table but I cant seem to be able to ORDER the way mysql select the values.

Here is my initial table:

Image can be found here: [URL]

(Change hxxp to http)
mysql_query("CREATE TABLE new_table as SELECT * FROM test GROUP BY url")
mysql_query("DROP TABLE test")
mysql_query("RENAME TABLE new_table TO test")

I want to remove the duplicated URL and make sure that it keeps only the value with the higher PR. I tried using the ORDER BY attribute but it doesnt seem to work. The first 3 values with a PR of 0 are always selected and placed in the new table...

The good result should be that the 3 values (a,b,c) with a PR of 6 are found in the final table.

I tried this and it doesnt work:

 mysql_query("CREATE TABLE new_table as SELECT * FROM test GROUP BY url ORDER BY pr DESC")

But there are no customer records for the mailing addresses, so I don't have an easy way to match a customer record as a key to see if it exists already in the master TABLE. So I've decided to have the new daily data feed added to the master TABLE and then remove duplicates.

What is the safest way to remove duplicates? Obviously, I want to ignore the ID column field. But how do I do this for the following fields:

What if I rebuild the MySQL TABLE to include ALTER TABLE with UNIQUE KEY, would that be safe? For example:

ALTER TABLE people ADD UNIQUE KEY (company_name,contact_name,address1,address2,address3,city,state,zipcode,phone_number,email_address)

Would the above safely prevent duplicated records from being INSERTed to begin with?
